#651: Oxford High School Shooting

Not that it is important, but I am from Michigan. I live approximately 45 minutes away from this High School. November 30, 2021, there was ANOTHER mass shooting. I honestly don’t know what or how to feel. There are always those of us who are grateful that we didn’t have someone be at one of these events, but on the flip side, you feel absolutely awful for the family who lost someone. And a child at that. I have said before and I’ll say it again, there is a gun issue in America. I don’t care if you’re talking about legal or illegal. There are more guns than people in this country. Why? Let’s rundown some of the talking points for a minute.

Republicans like to say, “we need people with legal firearms to stop the bad guys.” Ok. Where are you when this stuff happens. Ok, I’ll give you a pass for a high school, guns aren’t usually allowed there. What about the person who shot up a grocery store in Colorado earlier this year? No one had a gun to stop him? He killed 10 people.

How about the 15 people who were shot at a Tennessee grocery store in September? Were there people there with guns who save those in danger. Maybe. But they didn’t.

Hey, you know how there have been shootings at movie theaters, college campuses, grocery stores, churches, etc, etc… and there never seems to be one of these “saviors” around. I can’t quite grasp it. All I know, is that saying prayers for these families isn’t stopping other families from enduring the same fate.

They yell and cry, “don’t vote democrat. They’re trying to take our guns”. When and where. Y’all do realize democrats own guns too, right? The difference is, we don’t mind putting certain laws in place if that means we get less stories like the one today. They have been crying about this for decades and no one has done it yet. Nothing changed even after some person went into a school and murdered 5 and 6 year olds (This was a foreboding warning to Uvalde, Tx.)

Then there is this AR-15 debate, which shouldn’t be a debate. Why do I need something of that capacity, to hold all those bullets and shoots off that quick? I don’t. No civilian does. I personally don’t think a person needs more than 2 guns. One to carry on you and one if you like hunting. Everything else is an obsession.

So what do we do? It’s very easy to buy a gun here in the US. While background checks can be performed, you are at risk of leaving the firearm unattended and someone comes along and uses it. Which seems to be what happened here allegedly. The father bought this gun legally, not a week ago and the 15 year old son, took it to school and killed 3 people and injured 8 others. (Later confirmed to be four students)

I have to say, yes, the mental health of people in this country is awful. Just look at our health care system in general. People can’t be properly treated for ailments without going into debt. So, that makes these events even more scary. Why is it easier to buy a gun than get mental help? Why isn’t there a more thorough background check on these people. I realize in this case, the gun was taken from a parent. However, that’s not the case many other times.

Dillon Roof was allowed to purchase a gun because of a clerical error. He then took that gun and murdered 9 members of a church.

The aurora movie theater shooter, bought 4 guns and 6,000 rounds of ammo over a 60 day period. They were all bought legally. He killed 12 and injured about 60 more.

And one of the worst mass shootings in modern history where Stephen Paddock killed 59 people and injured over 500 in Las Vegas, is a testament to how easy it is to obtain guns. He bought 33 guns over the course of 12 months. Still, gun control is sensitive subject.

There have been approximately 652 mass shootings this year. This Year. Mass shootings can be categorized by how many people were shot, not necessarily killed, when there are at least 3 or 4 people involved. Different trackers have a different number they go by. These were just a few of the events that have happened over the course of a couple of years. Guns bought legally and used on innocent victims. When will it end? Will it ever end? I doubt it. This is America. They’ll never take muh’guns or freedumbs…
